Prakriti and Vikriti: The Difference Every Dosha Quiz Misses
Take the same online dosha quiz twice within a year and you can land on two different answers, and neither one is wrong.
That is the most common complaint aimed at dosha quizzes, and it usually gets read as proof that the whole system is soft science dressed up in Sanskrit. That reading misses what is actually happening. Most quizzes are measuring something real, they are just measuring the wrong layer and reporting it under the wrong name. Ayurveda, the traditional medical system of the Indian subcontinent, has always tracked two separate readings of a person, not one, and almost nothing written for a general audience explains which reading you just took.
The short version
Prakriti and vikriti sound like a technicality until you see what each one actually does.
Prakriti is the constitution you were born with. It does not change over a lifetime.
Vikriti is where you stand right now, and it moves with season, age, sleep, work and stress.
Most online dosha quizzes measure vikriti and label the result prakriti.
A practitioner reads both, separately, before making a recommendation.
Nadi pariksha, pulse reading, is one of the tools used to read vikriti in a consultation.
Neither reading is the true one. They answer two different questions.
Two questions, not one
If you have not read our guides to vata, pitta and kapha or the broader dosha guide, start there. This post builds on them with a distinction worth its own piece.
Prakriti is your original ratio of vata, pitta and kapha, the three doshas, set at conception and read as fixed for life. It is not a mood, not a phase, not something a bad week can shift. Classical texts describe it almost like a blueprint, the proportion your body was built to run on before anything in the outside world touched it.
A pitta prakriti does not stop being a pitta type after a calm year, because the blueprint underneath it never moved in the first place.
Vikriti is the opposite kind of reading. It is your current state, the balance of the same three doshas as they actually stand today, after diet, sleep, stress, the weather and the season have all had their say. Vikriti can shift week to week. A naturally kapha leaning person can show a vikriti heavy in pitta after a stretch of poor sleep and high stress, and that reading is accurate for right now even though it says nothing about their prakriti at all.
Why the quiz keeps changing its answer
Most online dosha quizzes ask questions like how is your digestion this month, how are you sleeping lately, do you feel anxious or sluggish right now. Every one of those is a vikriti question. That is the mechanical reason two honest attempts at the same quiz, six months apart, can hand you two different doshas.
The quiz is asking about your current state, then reporting the result as though it were your permanent type.
This is not a design flaw unique to bad quizzes. It is close to unavoidable in a short questionnaire, because vikriti is the layer that is actually easy to ask about in twelve multiple choice questions. Prakriti is harder to get at from the outside. It usually takes an experienced eye, a set of pulse observations, and a longer conversation about a person's whole life, not just their last month, to separate the baseline from the current weather sitting on top of it.
What a consultation actually reads
A trained practitioner works to separate the two readings on purpose, rather than collapsing them into one score. Part of that work is nadi pariksha, pulse reading, where a practitioner reads the qualities of the pulse at the wrist as one input into how vata, pitta and kapha are currently expressing in the body. Pulse reading speaks mostly to vikriti, the state right now, and it is combined with tongue observation, questions about digestion and sleep, and a longer history that helps establish the more stable prakriti picture underneath it.
A first conversation can start either way. Ayurway's video consultation is there for newcomers who want to begin with a conversation about history, digestion, sleep and stress before ever setting foot on the property. Pulse reading and tongue observation are done in person, with a practitioner in the room. If you want the full picture of what a visit involves, read our guide to what happens at a first consultation. An in person consultation is $130 for 45 minutes.

1. The baseline stops moving around
Once prakriti is established, it becomes a fixed reference point. A practitioner is no longer guessing whether today's fatigue is who you are or just what this month looks like. They have a baseline to measure the current state against, which is exactly what a one time quiz score can never give you.

2. The recommendation targets the gap, not the type
A plan built only from prakriti would handle a naturally calm kapha person the same in a stressful, sleep deprived month as in an easy one, which misses what actually needs attention right now. A plan built only from vikriti would chase symptoms without ever asking whether they fit the person's baseline in the first place. Reading both means the recommendation targets the distance between where someone naturally sits and where they currently are, which is a more specific problem than either reading alone can describe.
3. Vikriti gets reassessed. Prakriti does not.
A practitioner returns to vikriti at every visit because it keeps moving. Prakriti gets established once and referenced going forward, not measured again from scratch. That asymmetry is the whole reason the two term system exists instead of one general dosha score.
Reading both, not just one
Honestly, I think this split is the most useful idea in the entire dosha framework, more useful even than knowing your type in the first place. Knowing you are a pitta prakriti tells you something. Knowing that your current vikriti has drifted well past your baseline pitta tells you something you can actually act on this week.
None of this makes a quiz worthless. A quiz result is a real reading of your current state, and current state is worth knowing. The mistake is reading it as a permanent label, then feeling betrayed when it changes six months later. It was never supposed to hold still. Vikriti moves because your life moves, and a system built around only checking it once was never going to hold up.
If a quiz result and how you actually feel keep disagreeing with each other, that disagreement is not a contradiction to resolve on your own.
It is closer to a signal that the two readings have pulled apart, which is exactly what a consultation, pulse reading included, is built to sort out.
Book a consultation when you are ready to have both readings taken together, prakriti and vikriti, instead of guessed at separately.
