Everyone who walks through our doors for the first time asks some version of the same question. What's my dosha? And I get why. It's the entry point to almost everything in Ayurveda, and it's also the concept people misunderstand the fastest, usually because they took a two minute online quiz and got handed a label.
So let's slow down and actually explain it.
What a Dosha Actually Is
A dosha is one of three fundamental energies that Ayurveda says make up every body and mind: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. You have all three. Everyone does. What makes you you is the particular ratio, and that ratio was set at birth and shifts constantly based on season, stress, sleep, diet, basically everything you do all day.
Vata: Air and Space
Vata is air and space. Think movement, change, creativity, quick thinking. When it's balanced, Vata people are lively and imaginative. Out of balance, that same energy turns into anxiety, insomnia, dry skin, a racing mind that won't land anywhere.
Pitta: Fire and Water
Pitta is fire and water. Sharp intellect, strong digestion, natural leadership, a bit of intensity. Balanced Pitta gets things done and does them well. Unbalanced Pitta gets irritable, inflamed, and a little too convinced it's right about everything, which, having worked with more than a few strong Pitta types, I say with real affection.
Kapha: Earth and Water
Kapha is earth and water. Steady, grounded, loyal, calm. It's the dosha most associated with strength and endurance. Too much of it, though, and you get sluggishness, weight gain that's hard to shift, and a resistance to change that can tip into stagnation.
Prakriti and Vikriti: What the Quizzes Miss
Here's the part the online quizzes tend to skip. You have a constitutional dosha, called your prakriti, which is essentially your baseline from birth. And you have a current state, called your vikriti, which is whatever's actually going on with you right now. Those two are often different, sometimes very different, and the gap between them is usually the most useful information a practitioner can work with. Someone with a Kapha constitution going through a stressful, chaotic period might be showing up entirely Vata in the moment. Treating them as a textbook Kapha type would miss what's actually happening.

Why Knowing Your Dosha Helps
Once you know where you're starting from, the daily choices get a lot simpler. Foods, routines, even the time you go to bed can either feed an imbalance or ease it. That's the whole practical point of knowing your dosha. It's not a personality label. It's a working map for how to feel less like you're fighting your own body all week.
If you want a real reading rather than a guess, we do full consultations at our Sunol location and online, and it's usually the first thing we recommend before any treatment plan, panchakarma included.
