What Is Abhyanga? Inside Our Most Requested Massage in Sunol Valley

Massage therapist presses a warm herbal compress on a person’s back in a calm spa setting.

If you've been searching for a massage that leaves you feeling nourished rather than just worked on, you've probably come across the word abhyanga. It's the most requested therapy at our wellness center in Sunol Valley, and the one our guests from Pleasanton, Fremont, and across the East Bay return for again and again.

So what exactly is it? Here is everything you'd want to know before your first session.

Abhyanga, in plain language

Abhyanga is the traditional Ayurvedic full body massage with warm, herb infused oil. The word comes from Sanskrit and roughly means "oil application to the body," but that undersells it considerably. In Ayurveda, abhyanga is considered one of the most nurturing things you can do for yourself, a practice of care that has been passed down for thousands of years.

Two things set it apart from the massage you may be used to.

First, the oil. Abhyanga uses a generous amount of warmed oil, traditionally sesame based and infused with herbs, chosen to suit your constitution. The warmth and the oil are not an accessory to the massage. They are the massage. As the oil is worked into the skin, it softens, soothes, and settles the whole system.

Second, the strokes. Rather than deep pressure aimed at specific knots, abhyanga uses long, rhythmic, flowing strokes over the whole body, moving with the direction of the body's natural energy. The rhythm is the point. Guests often describe the feeling as being rocked into a state of deep calm, somewhere between awake and asleep.

What a session at Ayurway feels like

When you arrive at our center (Unit 6, tucked into the quiet of Sunol Valley), we begin with a short conversation. Your practitioner asks how you're sleeping, how your energy has been, and what your body has been carrying lately. This helps us warm the right oil for you.

Then you settle onto the table, and the pace of everything slows down. The warm oil is applied in long strokes from head to toe, with unhurried attention to areas that tend to hold tension: the shoulders, the back, the feet, the scalp. A full session gives you time to stop tracking time.

Afterward, we don't rush you out the door. You'll rest for a few minutes, let the oil continue its work, and drift back into your day gently. Many guests tell us the drive home through the Sunol hills is the most peaceful commute they've had all month.

Who tends to love abhyanga

We see the same kinds of guests fall in love with this therapy:

People who sit at desks all day.

Long strokes over the shoulders, neck, and back feel like an antidote to hours at a screen.

People who have trouble winding down.

The rhythmic, warm quality of abhyanga is deeply settling. Guests routinely report their best night of sleep in months after a session.

People who feel run down.

When life has been asking a lot of you, abhyanga is a way of giving something back to yourself.

People new to Ayurveda

Of all the traditional therapies, abhyanga is the most approachable first experience. There's nothing to learn and nothing to do. You simply receive.

Abhyanga and the bigger Ayurvedic picture

At Ayurway, abhyanga is wonderful on its own, and it's also a doorway. In traditional practice, it's often paired with Shirodhara, the flowing warm oil treatment for the forehead, and it forms a core part of Panchakarma, the classical multi day Ayurvedic reset. Guests who start with a single abhyanga often find themselves curious about the deeper programs, and we love that journey.

Because every treatment at Ayurway is tailored to your constitution, the best results come when we know you. That's why everything here begins with a consultation: a one on one conversation with our practitioners to understand your body, your rhythms, and what you need most right now.
